​What Are Fibroids

​

Fibroids are generally benign tumors composed of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue that can develop in and around the uterus. It's estimated that between 70 and 80 percent of women will experience fibroids at some point in their lives. The medical term for these growths is leiomyoma, or simply "myoma." Fibroids can appear as a single tumor, or there may be multiple ones in the uterus.
